With Head & Hand, a series (2013-…) Cypriot visual artist Kyriaki Costa poses the question of the “commons”, through an aesthetic approach to the relations between humans and their topos (place). She invites the residents of Tinos* to highlight the places that require restoration, and subsequently she asks technicians, builders, craftsmen to repair those spots having their own personal aesthetic as a compass – an aesthetic that, contrary to art and philosophy, is driven by functionality.

 

The artistic and research interests of Kyriaki Costa deal with rituals and topographies of everyday life. In her work, she chooses a participatory practice which proposes the art of walking in order to approach the place and the narrative as a collective polyphonic base from which we could start taking care of the commons. Head and Hand / Kaïros also deals with the current urgency of ecological awareness. It is being materialized in an almost invisible way, by recycling and repairing little details in parts of the paths selected by the inhabitants of the island and it creaties a discreet topography of care.

 

The flags that showcase the paths (C.F.T./Chora, Kyra Xeni, Tripotamos, Ktikados, Exomburgo)  along with a map are inspired by Cycladic architecture and are composed by recycled products of tourism (sheets, towels, tablecloths from the island’s hotels). While Tripotamos was chosen to honour Cornelius Castoriadis, who spent many of his summers there, the rest of the paths came about through the diachronic routes of the Chora, and through the meetings of the artist and the curator with the locals.

 

The exhibition presented in the space of the Association of Tripotamos and Speradianos “O Kavos” is the result of the intellectual connection between the artist and the island: before she visited Tinos, she researched forecasts and the main role that wind plays in shaping forms in the everyday life of the island. 

 

However, through a mental game, the significance of Kaïros (which means weather in Modern Greek) is slipping towards its philosophical meaning as the “adequate time” or that “unique moment”, a moment that, once it slips away, doesn’t come back. The present time of the place, temporality in everyday life of craftsmen, locals and visitors of Tinos, are becoming the active centre of the project.

Με το Head & Hand, a series (2013-…) η Κύπρια εικαστικός Κυριακή Κώστα θέτει το ερώτημα των «κοινών», μέσω μίας αισθητικής προσέγγισης της σχέσης των ανθρώπων με τον τόπο τους. Προσκαλεί κατοίκους του νησιού  της Τήνου* να επισημάνουν σημεία που χρήζουν αποκατάστασης ή φροντίδας, και στη συνέχεια μαστόρους να τα επιδιορθώσουν με πυξίδα την δική τους αισθητική – μία αισθητική που, σε αντίθεση με την τέχνη και τη φιλοσοφία, συνδέεται με τη λειτουργικότητα. 

Τα καλλιτεχνικά και ερευνητικά ενδιαφέροντα της Κυριακής Κώστα άπτονται των τελετουργιών και των τοπογραφιών της καθημερινότητας. Στη δουλειά της επιλέγει μία συμμετοχική πρακτική η οποία προτείνει το περπάτημα ως τρόπο προσέγγισης του τόπου και την αφήγηση ως συλλογική πολυφωνική βάση για την σύμπραξη και τη φροντίδα των κοινών. Tο Head & Hand / Καιρός αφορά επίσης και την πλέον επείγουσα οικολογική προσέγγιση του κόσμου. Υλοποιείται με σχεδόν αόρατο τρόπο, ανακυκλώνοντας και επιδιορθώνοντας μικρές λεπτομέρειες σε διάφορα σημεία δημιουργώντας μία διακριτική τοπογραφία της φροντίδας. 

Οι σημαίες που σηματοδοτούν αυτήν την διαδρομή (Χώρα Ι.ΤΗ.Π., Τριπόταμος, Κτικάδος, Εξώμβουργο)* είναι εμπνευσμένες από την κυκλαδίτικη αρχιτεκτονική και αποτελούνται από υλικά που είναι ανακυκλωμένα προϊόντα του τουρισμού (σεντόνια, πετσέτες, τραπεζομάντηλα των ξενοδοχείων του νησιού). Ενώ ο Τριπόταμος επιλέχθη ως φόρος τιμής στον Κορνήλιο Καστοριάδη, ο οποίος περνούσε εκεί τα καλοκαίρια του, οι υπόλοιπες διαδρομές προέκυψαν γύρω από τα διαχρονικά μονοπάτια της περιοχής της Χώρας μέσα από τις συναντήσεις της εικαστικού και της επιμελήτριας με ντόπιους. 

Η έκθεση που παρουσιάζεται στο χώρο του Συλλόγου Τριποταμιανών και Σπεραδιανών «Ο Κάβος» είναι αποτέλεσμα της νοερής σύνδεσης της Κυριακής Κώστα με το νησί πριν έρθει, όπου μελέτησε τα δελτία καιρού και τον ρόλο που παίζει ο αέρας στην καθημερινή ζωή του τόπου. Μέσω ενός διανοητικού παιχνιδιού όμως, η έννοια του Καιρού ξεγλιστράει προς την φιλοσοφική της σημασία ως «κατάλληλος χρόνος» ή «αρμόζουσα στιγμή» που εφόσον μας ξεφύγει, δεν επιστρέφει. Το παρόν του τόπου, η καθημερινότητα των μαστόρων, των κατοίκων και των επισκεπτών του, γίνονται λοιπόν το ενεργό κέντρο του εγχειρήματος.
